As many of you know, adversity is something I have faced more than my fair share of.
From my parents divorcing when I was eight, to losing my dad when I was twenty-three, to supporting my incredible sister through thirty-five years of health challenges, I have experienced it in many forms. In the last two years alone, I have battled cancer while keeping my business running, a business I had to rebuild after COVID, survived a near-death experience due to medical negligence, and continued navigating the ongoing ripple effects of cancer.
I have taken all of it in my stride. I love the saying “dancing through the lightning strikes”. I did not dance every day. Some days I barely stood up. But I stayed clear on my purpose: to do what I do, show up for the people I serve, and keep moving forward. And somewhere along the way I realised I am not just resilient anymore. I am beyond resilience.
We live in a fast-paced world, both in life and at work, and we are juggling more than ever. Gallup's latest global data shows around four in ten employees report experiencing a lot of stress on any given day. We are not short on adversity. I believe we are short on the ability to actually learn from it.
This is where the Gift Mindset comes in. It is the belief that even our hardest moments carry something for us if we are willing to look for it. Not toxic positivity. Not pretending the hard thing did not happen. But the discipline of asking, “What is this teaching me?” even in the thick of it. That is how a wound becomes a scar. Not erased, but healed, and carried forward as proof you got through it.
Research tells us that 46% of leaders lack resilience as a core leadership skill, yet it is one of the most powerful differentiators between leaders who merely cope and leaders who grow. The good news is that resilience is not a fixed trait. Instead, it is a journey. In my experience working with leaders across 24+ industries over two decades, and through everything I have personally walked through, that journey follows a very clear path.
I call it the Surviving to Limitless framework.
Here is how it unfolds.
Surviving: You are in the thick of it. No headspace, no reflection, just getting through the day, the meeting, the deadline. In leadership this looks like firefighting and reactive decision-making. In life it is running on the treadmill, surviving the moment rather than learning from it.
Steadying: The intensity has eased enough to catch your breath. You are not yet learning, but you are no longer in freefall. You are finding your footing again. At work this looks like re-establishing routine after a crisis. In life it is the first deep breath after the storm passes.
Strengthening: You start to notice the pattern. What happened is no longer random. You can see the shape of it, and you begin building the muscle to handle whatever comes next. In a team this looks like debriefing what went wrong and applying it. In life it is the moment adversity starts becoming useful rather than just survived.
Rising: This is where you actively extract the lesson. You are no longer just building capability; you are turning the adversity itself into insight. This is the Gift Mindset moment where the hard thing starts to mean something. In leadership this looks like mentoring others through what you went through. In life it is the shift from this happened to me to this taught me something.
Limitless: Notice the language shifts here. Everywhere else you have been doing, surviving, steadying, strengthening, rising. Here you are being. The lesson is not something you learned. It is something you are now. And once you have grown at this level, you cannot go back to who you were before. This is not a loop back to baseline. It is a permanent shift in capacity.
So here are two questions worth sitting with this week.
- What is the adversity in front of you right now actually trying to teach you that you have not yet stopped long enough to hear?
- Have you let yourself rise, or are you still just surviving?
The goal is not to avoid the hard things. I don’t think any of us get that option. The goal is to make sure we do not waste them.
I will be sharing more on this framework in my upcoming webinar and including it in the next phase of my work with leaders and teams.
