As we head into the final quarter of the year, it’s easy to start looking forward. Budgets, strategy, targets, people plans, and priorities for 2027 are quickly taking over.
But before we race into what’s next, there is enormous value in stopping and looking back.
Whether you’re a frontline manager, middle manager, senior leader, or business owner, you’ve probably navigated a lot this year. AI transformation has accelerated, the digital landscape continues to shift, economic and geopolitical uncertainty remains, and the way and where we work continues to evolve.
We spend so much time reviewing business performance, but how often do we review our own leadership performance?
I believe we need to go inwards to go outwards.
To be a Limitless Leader, we need to regularly reflect on the lessons we’ve learned, the challenges we’ve navigated and overcome, and the successes we sometimes move past without taking the time to celebrate.
We also need to ask ourselves what we’ve had to unlearn and relearn along the way. What thinking has shifted? What behaviours have changed? What have we let go of because it no longer serves us?
Limitless Leaders learn, unlearn, relearn, and continually evolve. Reflection gives us the space to make sense of our experiences, extract the lessons, and consciously decide what we want to take forward. That’s how we continue to grow and remain limitless.
Research supports the value of making that space.
A Harvard Business School study found that employees who spent just 15 minutes reflecting on what they had learned performed 22.8% better on a subsequent assessment than those who spent that time simply continuing to work.
Sometimes slowing down really does help us speed up.
Before you dive too deeply into planning for 2027, create some space and ask yourself:
- What worked well this year, and why?
Don’t rush past the wins. What decisions, behaviours, relationships, and ways of working contributed to your best outcomes? - What would I change or do differently?
Where did you spend energy that didn’t serve you, your people, or the business? Knowing what you know now, what would you stop, start, or approach differently? - Am I thinking, feeling, and doing what I expected at this point in the year?
Look beyond your KPIs. How is your energy? Are you leading intentionally or constantly responding to what is coming at you? - How have I lived and led through my values?
Values are easy to talk about when things are going well. Under pressure, have your decisions and behaviours reflected what you genuinely stand for? - How has our team or culture changed, and what part have I played in that?
Are your people more connected, collaborative, and trusting than they were 12 months ago? What experience are you creating for the people you lead? - How have I grown in emotional awareness and connection?
Are you listening differently, asking better questions, and having the conversations that matter? Do you know your people for who they are, not simply what they do? - What have I learned, unlearned, and relearned about myself as a leader?
What belief, behaviour or leadership habit no longer serves you? What lesson will you consciously carry into 2027?
Reflection isn’t about dwelling on the past. It’s about extracting the lessons from our experiences and using them to shape what comes next.
Limitless Leaders lead from the inside out. We need the self-awareness to understand ourselves, the curiosity to seek feedback, and the courage to change what is no longer working.
So before asking, “What do I need to achieve in 2027?” perhaps ask yourself a different question:
“Who do I need to become as a leader to take myself, my people, and our organisation forward?”
