AI is changing how we work at an extraordinary pace. It can research, analyse, summarise, generate ideas, and save us enormous amounts of time.

But as AI gets smarter, I believe our opportunity is to become more human, not less.

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 found that 39% of workers’ core skills are expected to change by 2030. While AI and big data are among the fastest growing skills, human capabilities including creative thinking, resilience, leadership, curiosity, and lifelong learning are also rising in importance.

Another global study found that 83% of employees believe AI will make uniquely human skills even more important, while 76% say they want more human connection as AI use increases.

That says a lot.

Now more than ever, to be a Limitless Leader we need to learn, unlearn, relearn, and continually evolve. Technical capability matters, but our human skills are what enable us to connect, influence, make sense of complexity, and bring people with us.

Here are 10 human skills I believe we need to ramp up.

1. Effective communication
Communication is so much more than transferring information. It is listening, reading the room, adapting our style, and ensuring our message lands as intended. How we communicate can be just as important as what we communicate.

2. Emotional intelligence
Understanding and managing our own emotions, while recognising and responding to the emotions of others, is critical. The more technology enters our workplaces, the more intentional we need to be about emotional connection.

3. Critical thinking and judgement
AI can give us information, perspectives and options, but we still need to question, discern and decide. Use AI to help find the facts and challenge your thinking, then bring in your Head, Heart, and Gut. What do you know? What feels right? What are your experience and intuition telling you?

4. Empathy
AI can generate empathetic words, but human beings experience empathy. Being present, curious, and genuinely seeking to understand another person builds trust and connection.

5. Curiosity and adaptability
The future belongs to people willing to question, experiment, and evolve. Limitless Leaders don’t assume what worked yesterday will work tomorrow. They stay curious and continually learn, unlearn, and relearn.

6. Optimism
Optimism isn’t about pretending everything is wonderful. It is about seeing possibility and opportunity, even when things are difficult. Through a Gift Mindset®, we can look at challenges and ask, “What can I learn from this?”

7. Resilience
Change, uncertainty, and disruption aren’t going away. Resilience gives us the capacity to navigate adversity, reset, and keep moving forward. It isn’t simply about bouncing back. It is about learning through what we experience and growing because of it.

8. Creative thinking
AI can generate ideas at speed, but we still need humans who can imagine what doesn’t yet exist, challenge assumptions, join seemingly unrelated dots, and ask better questions. Creativity keeps us moving beyond what we already know.

9. Storytelling and lived experience
AI can create a story, but it hasn’t lived one. Our experiences, lessons, mistakes, and successes give information context, emotion, and meaning. In a world where content can be generated in seconds, our lived experience becomes an even more powerful point of difference.

10. Connection and collaboration
Great leadership has always been about people. Building trust, creating psychological safety, collaborating across differences, and making people feel seen and heard will continue to matter.

Underpinning all 10 is leadership itself.

These human skills collectively contribute to great leadership, another human capability rising in importance. Leadership isn’t simply a position or title. It is how we think, communicate, connect, make decisions, navigate uncertainty, and bring out the best in others.

AI isn’t the enemy. Used well, it is an incredible partner.

The opportunity is to let AI do what it does best while we ramp up what we do best.

At RG Dynamics, we have spent over two decades delivering transformational leadership programs globally that focus on the human skills that create Limitless Leaders. We help leaders and teams lead through their Head, Heart and Gut, building communication, emotional intelligence, connection, resilience, mindset, and the human capabilities that will help individuals, teams, and organisations remain future fit.

The question isn’t simply, “How do we become better at AI?”
It’s also, “How do we become even better at being human?”
