The difference between success and failure is a great team.

With so much focus on the bottom line these days it’s easy to forget to focus on the people, the key to being a true and authentic Limitless Leader. Being a team isn’t about working together, it’s about respecting, trusting and owning the bigger picture, the outcome together.

The best teams I have led or worked in were the ones where we were all ignited by a common goal and there was high trust, transparency and a passionate energy. It wasn’t about “me”; it was about “we”. If someone were lagging behind or under target, we would pull together to make up the difference. At the end of the day, it wasn’t just about sole responsibility and accountability and more about group responsibility with shared accountability, all working towards the same outcome but in our own way.

We all have our own strengths and functions of our role that energise us, it’s what makes us unique and a great leader will assist individuals to identify those strengths and satisfy them, not just manage them.   Many executives I come across are amazing at what they do but they aren’t happy. There is a big difference in being good at what you do and loving doing what you are good at. When we do what truly energises us we can learn to compliment each other and be part of what I call a “strength based team”. There are tasks, activities and things we all don’t enjoy at some point, the key here is to ensure, where we can, that we feed those strengths more than we feed the things people don’t enjoy. There are fantastic tools that can measure strengths and levels of motivation, I also think as a leader we can also simply ask the question and assist our team to know and grow this.

Do you know the strengths of each individual in your team? What are they competent at? What gets them out of bed in the morning? What are they good at that they actually enjoy? What lights them up? Do they know what lights each other up?

When working with leaders and teams I encourage that dialogue around this be open, regular, consistent and activated. There is point discovering what lights your team up if you do nothing to assist them to drive this. Whether during a coaching conversation or team break out, make this a priority.

Build a strength based team and watch them flourish.

Kind Regards
